Planning Magazine Advert- Miss Miller

When an artist releases an album or a single, it is important that it is highly advertised and that many people know about it in order for it to become successful and popular with audiences.  A way of promoting an artist album or single is a magazine advert. These are effective as they enable for the album to be seen by wide audiences and therefore will raise popularity of the album. It also gives the artist an opportunity to sell themselves to the audience and gives more information about who they are and what they're about. My group and I will be creating a magazine advert and it is important to plan this as we want it to be successful. Planning it will allow us to include everything that we want to include and will represent the artist how we want them to be and will give the audience a wider understanding of whom the artist is and what they're about. When planning for our own magazine advert, it is important to consider every element from colours to layout and design.

The main colours that we aim to use in our magazine advert will be colours related to nature and the earth such as browns and greens. I have chosen to use these colours as I believe that by using these natrual colours, they are conventional of the indie genre as they portray the character traits of the artist to be happy and down to earth. These colours will be contrasted with darker colours, For example, the darker colours will represent the sad and anger of her personality and the dark side of a relationship, on the other hand, the light colours will portray her happy and funny side and the loving and heartfelt side of the relationship. These natural colours are conventional to the indie genre as most indie artists are relaxed and down to earth which these colours represent. However, because of the title of the song 'Burn', I may add warmer colours such as oranges and yellow to connect the audience to the song and what may be involved within the video and it gives the audience an insight and better understanding of the song. This is conventional of the indie genre as various indie artists are seen as rebellious and dangerous which this enforces.

Within the magazine advert, i have decided to use mainly conventional elements which conform to the indie genre. I will show the conventional elements through mise-en-scene such as clothing, setting and iconography. The clothing that I want to be shown on the magazine advert will include a baggy jacket, big boots and a bandana. I believe this will be effective as it is very casual clothing which means that the audience will be able to relate to her as she is easy going with what she wears and how she presents herself. This will make the audience want to find out more about her songs as they will be relatable. The setting that will be used for the magazine advert will be in a secluded alleyway, this makes the audience believe that the artist is somewhat mysterious. Because of where she is in the advert, it also portrays to the audience that she isn't trying to be centre of attention, she is down to earth and is easy going and doesn't mind where she is. Without using the conventions of the genre, we would not target the specific niche audience and the target audience would feel more distant from the artist, creating for the music video to become a flop.

The main and only image used within the magazine advert is a picture of the artist in a run down, secluded area where she will be seen to be smoking and playing her guitar. This again will make the audience realize that she is laid back and down to earth as she doesn't care about her surroundings as long is she is performing her music. This indicates to the audience that she takes her guitar everywhere she goes and that music is her life. This will enhance the audience and artist relationship as the audience will understand that the music is her life and will respect her and want to be like her. This will also allow for the audience to see who she is and what she looks like. As the artist is the main person within the video, my group and I decided that it would be appropriate to put just her on the front and be recognized. We have several pictures that we could use for the magazine advert ranging from long shots to close ups. A close up seems best fitted for this as we believe it will connect the artist and the audience together as she is the main singer of the song and the audience will be able to see clearly the look her face and how she is feeling. With a close-up also, the audience are able to see her makeup and see that it is subtle and looks like day-to-day make up any girl would wear. This will make the artist seem down to earth and relatable to the audience. It also sends the message across to the audience that you do not need to change to become successful and that you should not let fame change you. This will conform to the indie genre as indie artists are relaxed and easy going, which is how we want to represent our artist on the magazine advert.

The layout and design of the magazine advert will have the artist as the main feature so everyone will focus on her and portray that she should be the centre of attention. She will be seen in her clothing and holding her guitar. We will do this in order to present the artists talents to the audience, the audience will be able to see her diverse range of talents and be more attracted to her more, this will build the audience and artist relationship as the audience will want to aspire to be like her, and wanting to achieve her goals. Another option we may use is a close up, this show off the artists facial expressions to the audience and will allow for the audience to know how she is feeling and can imply that the artist wants to connect with a more personal feel as she is telling the audience how she feels. The close up will show eye contact with the audience, making the audience more interguied as to what her album may be about.  This is conventional of the indie genre as the artist is fully able to connect with the audience and can make the audience feel more involved and can introduce her feelings in which the indie genre aims to do.

The typography will be easy to read and rather simple, portraying the audience's persona and the way her outlook is towards life. The typography will match the music in which the artist sings. For example as the song name is 'Burn' the font used will be less elegant and more grungey looking in order to tell the audience about the hidden meanings within the song. The colours of the font will be orange and yellow within the word 'Burn', again prehaps making the audience believe she has two sides to her personality and what may be included in the video and attract a wider audience. The font that we write the word 'Burn' in may represent how different she is as an artist and may make people more interested in her and make her music more appealing to them.

  1. You have provided a basic analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen certain elements to use within your advert.

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you state whether you will include a personal message/acknowledgment from the artist and why
    2) Make sure you explain all elements fully in terms of what they create for the audience and how it will help promote the artist
    3) Elaborate on some of your points by explaining how you want elements used to represent and promote the artist
    4) Include a conclusion explaining how planning has helped you prepare for taking pictures and using photoshop
    5) Include a picture of your drawing

  2. You have elaborated on what the different elements included will create for your TA and how they will represent/promote your artist.

You still need to include a pic of your advert and a conclusion
