Within a music video is important to consider every element, including lighting and colours. A variety of lighting styles and colours are essential as they allow for a certain type of atmosphere to be created within the scene and can allow the audience to connected more to the artist as the lighting can portray the artist in certain ways. The lighting can also be used to determine and show the audience what type of artist that they are. For example, low key lighting can perhaps portray the idea that the artist is a sad, unhappy person. On the other hand, high key lighting can be used to portray the artist as a happy and free person.
High key lighting is mainly used when the scene is outside, such as in a field, as the natural light from the sun makes it high key and can represent the artist as someone whom lives free and is a happy person.
Different types of colours are essential within a music video, also, as each different colour can be used to represent a mood or emotion. For example, yellow and orange can be seen as fiery and passionate. Red can be seen as danger and fear whereas blue can be seen as distant. These colours can show the audience how the artist is feeling and what emotion they are feeling at a certain time within the scene and the video. It is important to use different colours as we are able to represent the emotions and feelings that the artist is feeling and the audience can relate more to them.
The first element of lighting that we are planning on using is the use of high key lighting. This will be used when we are outside in Camden and Brick Lane as the sun will give us the natural, high key lighting that we need. As she will be with her boyfriend as this point in the video, the high key lighting will represent them as a happy couple ans them as a strong couple enjoying time together. The high key lighting can be seen as a positive element and allows for the audience to see that the relationship is strong and healthy. This is conventional to the indie music genre as the artist is seen to be in a natural setting and portraying a free life and her being a happy character. For example, when they are in Camden and the lyrics sing 'play it loud'. The lighting will help to represent our artists personality and show the audience that despite her success she can still have fun and spend time with her loved ones.
The next lighting element that will be used is low key lighting. This will be seen inside the home at night time when she is having arguments with her partner. We have decided to use low key lighting when they are arguing as the dullness of the lighting will represent misery and sadness. The low key lighting represents negativity and a dull place. Ultimately, this portrays that they are not in a happy place and that their relationship is falling apart. We believed that low key lighting would help in representing the negative side of the relationship as the contrasting high key lighting will make it stand out more and make it more serious for the audience. This is conventional of a music video as it allows for the emotion and feelings to be shown more effectively.
At a certain point within our video we will be including a scene where the artist is by a fire, throwing certain things onto it. The red and orange light reflecting off of the fire will allow for the audience to know her feelings and emotions at the time. Typically, red and orange colours represent anger and danger, which is what we want to get across to the audience at this certain time. This is conventional to the indie music genre as the artist is expressing her feelings and emotions, which is typically what indie songs are about.
Another colour filter which will be used within the music video is the use of pink and red. These colours will be noticed when the couple are in the bedroom, laying in bed. We have decided to include these colours here as red and pink portray romance and love. Adding to this point of the video when they are in the bedroom will allow for the audience to understand that being together is all that makes them happy. It will also make the audience realise that when they are with eachother they fall inlove more and more. This can make the audience and artist relationship stronger as the audience can relate as they have been in the same scenario.
The target audience can build a strong relationship with the artist through the colours and lighting we have chosen. The lighting and colours portray how the artist is feeling at certain times. For example, we believe that the low key lighting will create a dull and sad atmosphere and the audience are able to feel sorry for the artist and sympathize with her. The red and orange lighting will represent anger, girls in whom are watching the video will be able to relate to the anger she is feeling as they may have been in the same situation.
