Music Video Storyboards- Miss Georgiou

My group and I created a storyboard in the planning process of our music video. The purpose of cresting a storyboard is to allow us to plan what specific elements we will be including within our music videos at certain times. It also enables us to plan second by second all the different elements such as the different camera angles, the setting, the editing, iconography and sound etc. It also gives us a better idea of how the video will turn out to be like at the end of the filming process and therefore we can plan in detail each second to make it as successful as possible. Because the camera angles change extremely quickly, the storyboard allows for us to know what each camera angle is going to be, making it an easier process to film. The storyboard will make everything much more simpler for us as we have a step-by-step plan of what we have to do and will not create any confusion when it comes to filming. It also allows us as a group to discuss together what we think would work well and what we could include to make it better.

Whilst planning for the music video, I used many different elements through primary and secondary research. The primary research consisted of questionnaires, vox pops and the feedback from peers and teachers i had received. The questionnaires that my group and I created allowed us to gain more information about the indie genre. We asked the public a range of open and closed questions ranging from how old the participant is and what they would expect to see in the indie genre. This enabled us to gain more information about the indie genre and what people would want to see included in a successful indie music video. For example, many people wanted to see the use of a guitar as they believed it was stereotypical of the indie genre. Therefore, we took their advice on board and will be using a a guitar in order to attract more people and make it more enjoyable for the audience.

We also used secondary research as we began to analyse different music videos ranging in genres, in order to give us inspirations for our music video. By doing this we were able to plan our storyboards much easily as we had better insight and knowledge to what codes and conventions were typicaly used by the genre such as location, iconography, lighting and editing. While analysing the different music videos we noticed that certain elements were constantly used throughout, which gave us a clear indication of what to include within our own production in order for it to be successful. We also noticed that some videos would subvert their genre in subtle ways and try to find hidden meanings within the song so that the audience feel that there is more to the song than what the narrative is telling them. The inspirations that we took from the videos was the mise-en-scene elements such as clothing, body language and lighting. Also, camera angles were a key inroisration for my group and I as we believed that the different camera angles the vidoes used, made them more interesting and engaging for the audience. The location was a main inspiration also, the natural locations and realistic settings represented the artist as down to earth and humble which is what we also wanted to portray so we believed that by using these settings, we would create a successful representation of the artist. The secondary research helped my group and I massively as we were able to know of the codes and conventions in which to follow in order to create a successful indie music video.

My group and I had a meeting and planned our storyboards on paper. This allowed us to sit down as a group and plan step-by-step all of the elements that we wanted to include and allowed for each member of the group to have a say in what they wanted to include. By planning the storyboards we listened to each second of the song, planning what would happen at each point. This ultimately let us plan the storyboard much more easily as we followed the lyrics and therefore the lyrics and visuals would match. This allowed for us to have a clear image in our minds of what would be included in the video and how the end result would be and could therefore change things around if we felt like it wasn't right or typical of the genre. For every camera angle, we had to explain what editing style would be used, what iconography would be used, how long the frame would last for and where the frame would be set. We did this for every different camera angle we wanted to include, therefore giving us numerous amounts of storyboards and frames to work with when filming our music video.

Whilst doing our storyboards, we shared the roles equally so that each member of the group had a fair chance of giving ideas to include within the storyboard. However, to make the task easier, we allocated roles to each person within the group. Heather Everingham gave the final approvals and made the final decisions on what would go into every frame and made them much more precise. She made it clear how long each frame would be and specifically what will be included in the frame. Leandra, another member of my group, gave ideas about narrative and the camera angles that we should specifically used which then led me to plan iconography and location. This helped us share the responsibility when planning and we all had equal opportunity to share ideas once we had finalized everything. Giving specific roles allowed for us to guide and help eachother once we had finished and give or opnions on what had been planned. By giving certain roles and accepting certain responsibilities we were able to get the storyboards completed quicker and more efficiently.

We followed our storyboards as best as we could, which was most of the time. However, we filmed a lot of footage at once in order to achieve more natural footage and close to reality which the audience could relate to. Ultimately we followed the storyboards but we also filed much more footage in different angles so we could create a more pleasurable viewing experience and so the audience can see the same thing but from different peoples perspectives which gives the audience more of an insight to what the would see if they were in the scenario. The filming schedule also allowed us to film things for the right amount of time, the storyboard gave us an idea of how many seconds to film clips for in order to follow the lyrics and the actual song itself.

  1. This post demonstrates a proficient understanding of why storyboards are essential to include within a production. You have made a start in explaining what primary and secondary research you carried out, but you need to be more specific with what you found out and how it helped you to create your storyboards.
