The artist may also include a small note directed to the audience to thank them for their support and buying the album. This makes the digipak more personal for the audience and make the audience feel more personally connected to the artist. The 6 sides of the digipak instead of 4 on a regular CD, allows it to be more detailed which makes the audience believe they are paying a good price for the best images.
The jewel CD case usually has the key information that the audience will want and need, this will include the artists name and the songs that are on the album. This allows for the audience to know what will be included on the album before purchasing so they know what they are in for if they decide to buy it. The artist name and an image will usually be on the front of the CD. The image will make the CD stand out for the audience. For example, if the image on the front is bold and colourful, more people are going to notice it in shops and are therefore more likely to buy it. Jewel CD's are much more durable than digipaks as they have a plastic casing which allows for it to not be damaged easily and can last for much longer than digipaks. There will usually be lyrics contained within pack which may include the main songs within the CD, this allows for the audience to sing along and get more involved within the song.
This is a digipak from our chosen artist Ellie Goulding which is for her album 'writer'.
The representation of the artist is seen through the images and the font used. She is seemed to be a free, young talented girl. The flowing font suggests that she is easy going and free flowing and is just being herself. One image shows her playing her guitar in a recording studio, this shows her as talented and that she is proud of her talents and wants to show them off to the audience. The connotations of this picture, of her playing her guitar, shows that she is relaxed while she works and that she works hard in order to create the best songs possible for her fans.
The next picture included on the digipak is her in a field. This can portray her as a rebellious, free woman in whom likes to spend time by herself. As in the picture we are only seen her, this can represent to the audience that she is independent and doesn't rely on anyone else. The connotations within this particular section can show that the artist is trying to portray to her audience that being independent can make you successful and wealthy.
Overall, all the images that are used on this digipak include her on them. This can mean to the audience that the artist wants everyone to look at her and that she should be the centre of attention. This can therefore give the impression to the audience that she is vain and can therefore make people be less attracted to her.
The colours that are used within the digipak are mainly colours relating to nature and colours which are soft and girly. One of the pictures seen gets its light from being outside in natural surroundings, this creates a more natural feel for the audience, making the audience believe she is down to earth and friendly. This enables for the audience and artist relationship to build as the audience know she is a natural person and isn't being fake or superficial about who she is. The connotations used within the colours can show that Ellie Goulding, the artist, is a gentle and genuine person, through the way she has portrayed herself and the body language that is shown on the digipak. As the colours are light and soft, the audience are more able to connect with her knowing she is down to earth and a happy person, whereas if the colours were darker and more edgy, this may portray her as a dangerous and feisty character. Colours are extremely important to consider when making a digipak as certain colours can present personality traits.
The typography used is written in italic to give an insight to the music that will be included in her album and could also possibly mean that its the artists hand writing that we can see. The italic writing suggests that the music is relaxing for the audience. Because the writing is flowing and girly, this can also give the audience an understanding of what her personality is like, that she is easy going and perhaps very girly. Contrastingly, if the writing was messy and bold, it may suggest her personality to be different, such as grungey and tom-boyish. The font is as if someone has written it which coincides with the album name which is 'The Writer' which gives the digipak a more personal feel to it as they believe that the artist has written it for the audience and connects them more. The connotations here may make the audience understand more her personality is like. It makes the audience have a better understanding of what types of songs will be included on her album.
The design and layout is somewhat simple with various close up shots of Ellie Goulding's face to show the audience who the artist is and to promote her as being an inide artist which is clear to see as the make up, clothing and hair. These different pictures of herself gain the audiences attention and give it a more personal feel as they feel they are on a journey with the artist, as each picture shows something different to the creation of her album. The writing that is above and below the artists face makes it seem as if she has written it herself, this gives it a more personal feel towards the audience and therefore makes the audience more intrigued into the album as they feel as if the artist is reaching out to them. Because each section includes a picture of the artist, it makes the audience clear to see that she is the most important person in the process of her album making, she wants to take credit for her work as well as wanting to show the audience who she is and what she is about.
The style of language that the digipak contains is rather simple and easy to read, this attracts a much wider audience as all people can read it. Using more complicated or difficult words would mean that not all people could read it, being intimidated by the words resulting in not purchasing the album. The connotations used within this section show that the artist is a person who doesn't speak many words but lets her music do the talking. The lack of words on the digipak show that the audience have to listen to her album in order to get more of an insight to who she is and to get more of an understanding of her.
I will use my research on this digipak when creating my own as i can use these ideas that are related to the indie genre. The conventions and connotations will reach out to the audience and make them feel more involved in what the artist is about.
