Music Video Inspirations- Miss Georgiou

We have watched many music videos in which have given us inspiration for our individual video and given some inspirations of what we could include in our music video.

The first music video which we considered when planing our music video and which gave us inspiration for our own production was Ellie Goulding 'How Long Will I Love You'. This is the artist which we are using for our own production and we beliveed that watching her other videos would give us inspirations and ideas in which we could use within our own Ellie Goulding video. Whilst watching this video, i noticed many elements that i would want to include within my own video. The cinematography within this video was the main focus for me and gave me many ideas to include. For example, the hand-held camera shot facing Ellie and her boyfriend was one cinematography element that stuck out for me. This is represents their happy relationship and that she wants to capture all moments together. Within my production, I want to show the good and bad times of a relationship, I believe that the handheld camera shot shows the loving side of the relationship and I will certainly be using this element in my own video.
The video switches between the artist singing in a recording studio to different settings when she is with her boyfriend. I like this element as then it has a mixture between performance and narrative bases concepts. I will also be using this element within my own video as I want the artist to be known within the video, as well as portraying both sides of a relationship, good and bad.
Mise-en-scene is a conventional part of this video, portraying the indie/pop genre well. She is wearing jeans, a baggy jacket and a beanie hat. Her clothing represnts the relaxed nature of the relationship and that they are comfortable around eachother. There are many iconography element used. She is playing the piano at the beginning of the video, this shows off her talents and that her music is created by her. This element portrays her as multi-talented which i want my artist to portrayed as also. I will do this by having my artist playing the guitar and singing into the camera.

The next artist i looked at for inspirations was Avril Lavigne in whom gave me many inspirations that i could include in my own productions. She is very divrese in within her music videos some range from pop/rock to just rock. Her lyrics are also inspiring as they are written by her and therefore truly mean something. The first song i looked at by her was complicated, the lyrics inspired myself and my group as it shows the complicated and hard side of a relationship- which we want to emphasise within our video, the good and bad sides of a relatiobship.

The second artist I looked at was Avril Lavigne whom I took inspiration from as she is so diverse with her music videos in which some range from Pop/Rock to just Rock and her lyrics are so inspiring as they come from the heart and really feel like they mean something. I looked at her song complicated, as the lyrics really inspired me as it shows a complicated love - with heartbreak - and we can feel her anger through her lyrics and her actions within the video. It inspired me as she had used mainly the stereotypes of a pop/rock video with her mis-en-scene costume and make up. She was in a skaters outfit with grungy yet subtle makeup. Although it is subtle makeup it is still very conventional to that particular genre and that is why it has inspired me the most, not because of the lyrics but the way it follows conventions. Although this may not work in our favour, but by many artists following the coventions of their genre they have made great music videos and I think one of the key elements that we need is to follow the conventions especially mis-en-scene as this creates an image for the artist that can make the whole video come together.

The last song in which I looked at which gave me inspirations was the pop/rock music genre with the song Love Song by Sara Bareilles. This music video has a an upbeat tune to it, despite being a sad love song. The setting of the music video is rather strange and can be seen as diverse in which is why it attracted me to this video. It is a cross between a music booth and a dolls house which is showing where she lives. I am attracted to this video because of the story which is involved behind the music which is a bout a strange relationship of where owner of the house expects the women to play love songs and do what she says but she stands up to him and refuses to play so would rather be seen as a person and not an object that you would buy off a shelf. The music video is primarilly narrative but there are parts where a performance is shown, for instance, when she is playing the piano foe the audience. The editing used is different when the music sheet develops a 3D effect and comes to lifem and is also shown at the end of the music video when it appears next to her. The cinematography used is mainly close ups which are used to show and promote the artist. Mise-en-scene is specifically used in the use of clothing where she swaps between a normal white dress and a formal black dress which she wears when she performs to the audience. This can show the different attitudes the artist has when she is performing and when she isn't. For example, she may believe she has to dress up and look nice when she performs in front of people. Another element of mise-en-scene that is used is iconography when the coin is made to look large compared to the small artist who reaches out to take it, this shows the dimensions of size between the two. Overall, within this video, the artist is portrayed as someone whom is onvolved within a strange relationship.

The next video that I Looked at was Ed Sheeran's video of A Team. I looked at this specifically for the editing technique it uses. The first style of editing that the video uses is the use of colour filters, creating the video to be black and white, throughout. The use of these two colours allow for the artist emotions and feelings to be portrayed to the audience. The black and white represents the feelings as being upset and that her life is perhaps dull and that everything is simple. It also create for the video to have a more emotional feel. This can make the audience feel sorry for her and connect towards her, sympathising her situation. This is conventional of the indie genre as the artist is able to convert her feelings through the colours without singing it, creating a hidden message within the video. I will be using colour filters such as black and white within my own production as I believe that it will create a more deep, loving feeling, making the audience believe that the couple are deeply in love. The audience will be able to connect with the emotions that the video is portraying and enhance the audience and artist relationship.
The next editing effect that the music video uses is the use of a time laps. This is where the everything is sped up and the artist is seen to be a normal pace and everything around her is moving quickly. This makes the audience focus on her and that she is the centre of attention. This makes the audience focus on her and the artist is bale to portray her feelings through her facial expressions and body language. This os conventional of the indie genre as the audience are focused on her and able to know how she is feeling. I will be using this in my own production as it allows for the artist to seem as if she is reflecting on her relationship and will allow for the audience to know how she feels about her relationship and they can relate with her as they may been in the same situation.
The final part of editing techniques used in the video is the use of the slow editing. The slow editing allows for the audience to see more about her life and therefore the audience can relate to her more. The longer clips allow for the girls life to be shown to the audience, she is shown to be sitting on the floor and walking around London. This makes the audience feel sorry for her. The slow editing is conventional as the audience are given more insight to her life. I will be using slow editing within my music video in order to portray the relationship in which the artist has. The long clips will allow for the audience to have an insight to her relationship and what the relationship brings. This allows for the audience and artist relationship to build as the audience could of been in the same situation.

  1. This post demonstrates some good points on the inspirations that you have gained so far from your research. You have discussed your three music videos well and have considered certain micro elements that you could consider within your own production.

Remember that this is a planning post so it needs to be updated constantly. Also aim to include three artists/songs that you are considering for your own production.

  2. You have made a start in including further inspirations. Now you need to consider how you will use your inspiration when creating your music video.
