Applying For Copyright- Miss Georgiou

The concept of the copyright law originated in the United Kingdom in the year 1710. The copyright law is a legal right created by the law of a country, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution. However, this is usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator to receive compensation for their intellectual effort. Within the music industry this means that the lyrics and sound recordings are all under copyright so that the owner can protect their work and how it is used. Copyright of music includes:
- The reproduction of the work. This includes reproducing it in sheet music or on records.
- Publish the work, e.g by lawfully supplying copies of it to the public.
- Communicate the work to the public. Example include live performances, playing and recording music in public, playing music on the radio.
- Make make an adaption of the work. e.g arrangements, transcriptions and parodies.

After researching more into the issue of copyright my group and I realised we had to get permission to use the song. So therefore, we had to apply for copyright as it is against the law to use another person or artists song which is their property and would therefore would have the rights to fine you for using their song without permission.

Researching into our artist in whom we are doing, Ellie Goulding, it became evident that her record label was named 'Polydor'. Me and my group emailed them asking for permission to use their song 'Burn'. We did this as we wanted to do things professionally and follow the law and posting it on youtube with permission would be much easier and less hassle for the group and myself. We are following the copyright laws which means we are not using their song or their property without their permission.

Here is the copy of the email that a group member, Leandra Saunders, sent to the record label. This emails covers all aspects of the copyright law. It identifies why we would like to use the specific song and what we need the song for. This gives them an overview of the purpose of the video.

We are currently still waiting for the company to email us back regarding whether we can use the song or not.

MY group and I are still waiting on a response from the record label, telling is wether we can use their song or not. We understand that Music labels are extremely busy and therefore we may never receive a response. We have considered this and are still continuing to plan our music video until we her otherwise.

  1. This demonstrates proficient understanding of why music copyright is essential to carry out and consider, especially when creating a production.

Aim to include the response from your record label, once you have received it
