Analysis of a Star and Dyer's Theory- Miss Miller

Various artist's chose reinvent themselves for many different reasons. For instance, they may feel the need to reinvent themselves in order to appeal to a wider audience. Another reason to why an artist may feel to change their image and who they are is to perhaps show their real identity and not hide their true selves in which may lead to their music becoming a different style of genre. Richard Dyer has written extensively about the role of stars in film and TV as well as music and believes that stars have some key features in common.

A dominant artist who has changed her image dramatically is Miley Cyrus, turning from a teen pop star to a rebellious teenager. It is noticeable that over the years she has successfully changed her image and reinvented herself. The three music videos which I will be analysing in order to explain her reinvention are Best of Both Worlds from when she was known as Hannah Montana, Party In The USA, and We Cant Stop, her newest video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vHKfwuCrQM The Best of Both Worlds music video is entirely performance based which is one of the seven features of Goowdwin's theory. The performance is seen  throughout the entire video. Within her performance she has dancers dancing behind her whilst she is singing, this is conventional of the pop genre as it portrays Hannah Montana, the artist as the most important and that she is centre of attention. The target audience, whom are in the crowd and seem to be young of age, will watch her performance and want to achieve to be like her, the centre of attention and everyone should focus on her. The next element of Goodwins theory which is evident in the music video is that the music matches the visuals that are seen. For instance, when the beat of the music is heard, the visuals will change to a different shot or camera angle. This makes the video very upbeat and fast moving which is reinforcing the stereotypes of the pop genre as it is generally fast beat and a song in which people can dance to and this is evident when the audience is shown as everyone is dancing. The last element that occurs is the use of close-ups of the artist. The use of close ups is essential, Goodwin states, as it is the demands of the record label. This camera shot allows for the artist to be promoted and to its target audience, as it was one of her first songs, it allows for the audience to see who she really is. Also, when looking at old videos and current videos of the artist, it allows us to see how they have changed over the years and what has changed about the artist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11SvDtPBhA The next video from this artist is Party In The USA. By the time she had released this video, she had changed her name from Hannah Montana and was now recognized as her original name, Miley Cyrus. The first element again of Goodwins theory which is evident in this video is the performance based clips. Within the first clip we are shown, she is singing into the camera, this makes the audience feel more involved with the song and the audience feels as if she is talking to her. Which is conventional of the pop genre as the audience will feel excited and intrigued as she is looking down the camera lens. The long shot allows for the audience to see her clothing in which is shorts, a small top and boots. The long shot of her performing here, portrays to the audience her change, with comparison to her first video to here, her clothing options have changed and she has dyed her hair dark brown. The slightly provocative clothing and the darker hair is the first noticeable element of change of the artist. The next element is the frequent notion of looking. As she is walking past many people, she is looking into the camera pointing, smiling and singing. This again makes the audience feel more involved with the song yet it also portrays and sells her new image to her new intended audience. The watchers of the video can see how she has changed and developed as an artist and may be attracted to her more as Miley Cryrus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrUvu1mlWco  The last video which shows the development and change of the artist is We Can't Stop. As the video begins, we are shown a close-up clip of the artist putting grills in her teeth. Goodwin's theory states that the record label will demand close ups in order to advertise and sell the artist. The close up here allows for the audience to see her new look and how she has dramatically changed since her last video. This shot allows for the audience to build a relationship with her as they can see her change and therefore like or dislike it. Within this video there is also a frequent notion of looking taking place. The artist looks into the camera lens occasionally this allows for the audience to build a relationship with the audience as they feel a connection with her. The audience feel as if she is singing to them directly. This also allows for the audience to see her fully and be able to understand her change in appearance.

The genre in which Miley Cyrus is pop. Throughout the videos that I have watched, it has become clear that is the pop genre due to the generic codes and conventions. In her first video which is The Best Of Both Worlds, it is evidently clear to the audience that this is of the pop genre. This can be told due to the throughout performance of her song. The back-up dancers and dance routines are highly conventional of the pop genre, this is due to the the target audience being young children and therefore would have to appeal to them the most. The target audience can be told due to the audience in the video being young children in whom are dancing and singing along.  The next video which is Party In The USA is also highly conventional of the pop genre, there are also background dancers in order to create the artist to be the centre of attention and that everyone should be focused on her. It is also conventional due to the setting in which it is set in. The scenes and clips that are shown shows us that there is a party taking place, this attracts teenagers as it is something that they typically like to do and would be interested to watch. The colours that are within the video are all bright and colourful, this is tints and filters to make the artist look perfect and therefore people will look up to her and aspire to be her. In We Can't Stop there are manty generic codes and conventions, also included. For example, Miley, the artist is seen in almost every frame, this highly generic of pop genres as they want to show themselves off to the audience and to be seen the most. Also, the setting in which the video is taking place, the artist is with her friends and there is also a party environment, this is conventional as it makes the song more relevant to the target audience. The iconography that is used make the video diverse and unique to its genre and makes the audience interested and want to see more of the artist. The quirky props also have purpose to show how she has changed as an artist. Comparing to her other videos such as Best Of Both Worlds and Party In The USA these videos include conventional iconography such as a microphone, drum set and cars. However, in this video with iconography such as lolypops, a bike machine and chips, they are contrasting and different things used. This also shows her change and adaption as an artist.

When Miley Cyrus was known as hannah montana her target audience here are young girls. Because she was young herself and her image was something young females could look up to, she attracted the attention of young females. Children would want to look like her and aspire to be her. In her next video, Party In The USA, her target audience had altered slightly, her new target audience would be young teenagers such as 12-15. By now, she has reinvented herself to appeal to a wider audience, her image was completely different and therefore would attract a larger audience as well as keeping her orginal fans. Her last video We Can't Stop, attracted an even larger audience with teenagers and young adults both being attracted to this video. The party and jet-set, fun lifestyle within this video was seen by teenagers as something they would want to do and would motivate them to work hard to ahcieve this fame lifestyle. However, the young adults have already expreienced this and therefore can relate to what they are being shown. They feel as if they have a connection with the artist as they both have done the same thing and both enjoy partying. This builds an audience- artist relationship as they can relate to her. Overall, her target audience has changed over time. As she has become older and more in control of what she wants to do, she is able to express herself freely as she wishes. I believe that she has changed her target audience as she wants to relate to as many people as possible. With the genre being pop, she still attracts young people yet can also be appealed to by an older audience.

Applying For Copyright- Miss Georgiou

The concept of the copyright law originated in the United Kingdom in the year 1710. The copyright law is a legal right created by the law of a country, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution. However, this is usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator to receive compensation for their intellectual effort. Within the music industry this means that the lyrics and sound recordings are all under copyright so that the owner can protect their work and how it is used. Copyright of music includes:
- The reproduction of the work. This includes reproducing it in sheet music or on records.
- Publish the work, e.g by lawfully supplying copies of it to the public.
- Communicate the work to the public. Example include live performances, playing and recording music in public, playing music on the radio.
- Make make an adaption of the work. e.g arrangements, transcriptions and parodies.

After researching more into the issue of copyright my group and I realised we had to get permission to use the song. So therefore, we had to apply for copyright as it is against the law to use another person or artists song which is their property and would therefore would have the rights to fine you for using their song without permission.

Researching into our artist in whom we are doing, Ellie Goulding, it became evident that her record label was named 'Polydor'. Me and my group emailed them asking for permission to use their song 'Burn'. We did this as we wanted to do things professionally and follow the law and posting it on youtube with permission would be much easier and less hassle for the group and myself. We are following the copyright laws which means we are not using their song or their property without their permission.

Here is the copy of the email that a group member, Leandra Saunders, sent to the record label. This emails covers all aspects of the copyright law. It identifies why we would like to use the specific song and what we need the song for. This gives them an overview of the purpose of the video.

We are currently still waiting for the company to email us back regarding whether we can use the song or not.

MY group and I are still waiting on a response from the record label, telling is wether we can use their song or not. We understand that Music labels are extremely busy and therefore we may never receive a response. We have considered this and are still continuing to plan our music video until we her otherwise.

Analysis of Music Genres- Miss Georgiou

Music videos can appeal to several audiences in a way that entertains them and allows for the audience to have insight to the artist lifestyle. There are different genres to music which means that that each genre of music will differ in their music video. Rap genre will include things such as expensive cars, money and chains, for example. These things may attracts the target audience into watching the video as it may be interest to them and therefore the popularity of the video is widened. On the other hand, dance, for example, will include elements such as flashing lights, dancing and promote a jet-set lifestyle which particular audiences may be attracted to and be be inspired to do. The next genre that differs from these is pop. Pop has conventional characteristics in which the audience may be attracted to. For example, back up dancers, dance routines and a performance based concept.

The first music genre that I will be analysing is Rap with the song Over performed by Drake. Throughout the music video at several points, we are shown two images of the artist, Drake. This is called a two shot. The two shot shows clearly whom the artist is and it creatives a narrative concept as it shows what he is thinking and expresses his emotion. The creative side to this video shows the type of artist that he is and this will build a relationship with the intended audience as they are able to see his emotion and sympathise with him. This is a conventional element in which is seen in the rap genre as the two images we are seen gives the impression to the audience that the artist is the most important and should be the centre of attention. There is also use of a close up within the video that is noticed at the beginning of video when he first looks into the camera. This shows to the audience that he is emotional and that he wants to share his story with the audience and this would therefore build the relationship with the audience. This is because we feel as if that he is talking directly to us. With the use of the close-up, we are able to see the clothing the clothing in which he is wearing which is a basic grey coat and as it seems, a black top. This represents to the audience that he is down to earth and doesn't need expensive clothes to portray his wealth. This subverts the rap genre as the clothing makes him seem humble and one who doesn't care about the money and does his job because he loves to do so. The next element of Drake's music video is the use of fast pace editing in which is used when the backgrounds changed. The fast pace excited the audience as it matches the lyrics and his previous life before fame and leading up to the limelight. This ultimately informs the audience that his life is moving quickly and rapidly and which also establishes his style of music being fast pace and up beat. This is stereotypical of the rap genre as the fast pace editing shows passion and that his life is dramatic. Fading in and out is another editing element that is used when Drake moved to a different location. This helped the audience that the song had developed and and that the artist was explaining another point in his life. This is important as it shows the audience the main point in his life which is conventional as Rap artists like to tell their background story. A typical mise-en-scene element is location and within this video the main location is the bedroom. This is a domestic and everyday setting and makes the song more personal to himself. As this is a relatable setting, this allows for the target audience to relate to him and the song in more detail.

The next genre of music video is Dance with Flo Rida's song Can't Handle Me. Flo Rida is a Rap artist but with the David Guetta feature, this turns it into the dance genre. Throughout the video it is noticed that there is use of fast pace editing. This use of editing is conventional to the dance genre as it represents the beat of the music and resembles the fast pace of the music. Wihtin this video, the fast pace editing represents the lifestyle of the club, and the jet-set lifestyle of Flo Rida. It also matches the people dancing and having fun. This allows for the audience to enjoy what they are seeing and ultimately wish they were doing the same. This builds the relationship with the audience as they will aspire to be like the artist and live the life in which he has. Another editing element seen within the video is a split screen. The left side of the screen shows people having fun and dancing in the club and the right side of the screen shows an empty street at night time. This contrast in setting shown gives the audience a contrast of the artists lifestyle and the average lifestyle outside of the club. Thus, this ultimately makes the audience chose his lifestyle over the average lifestyle as his is presented as more glamorous and much more appealing. This build the relationship between the artist and audience as they want to be like him and aim to achieve his lifestyle which is conventional of this genre as the artist will always want to show off their lifestyle and they way in which they live. There is notice of a zooming in shot, resulting to a close up. When the camera zooms in we are able to see that the artist is stood on a platform with people dancing below him. The platform that he is on shows the importance of himself, it represents that he is more important compared to others and that everyone should focus on him. The close up allows for us to focus on him and what he is doing. Both these camera shots are conventional of the dance/ rap genre as the artist likes to be center of attention and likes to show himself of as more important than the people he is surrounded with. This can make the audience be more intrigued about him and want to find out more. There is also a high angle which is noticed during the club scene. From this angle, is shows everyone as happy and having fun. This follows the dance genre as it shows people dancing and having a good time in which dance music allows people to do. The setting in where the majority of the video is set is in the club which is seen throughout the majority of the video. This element is highly stereotypical of the dance genre as it is where the artist may spend a lot of his time and therefore wants to show off his lifestyle and so, people aspire to be like him.

The next genre is a genre in which I get to chose. I have chosen the pop genre with the song 'Baby I' performed by Ariana Grande. As the video begins we are shown a close up of the artist singing into the camera. This falls into Goodwin's theory as the notion of looking and the frequent request of close ups. The close up in this video allows for the audience to feel as if she is singing to them. As the target audience are teenagers and younger children, the audience feel as if she is singing to them and ultimately builds the relationship with the audience and makes a personal connection between the audience and her. This is stereotypical of the genre as close ups within music videos allow for the relationship to build which this video successfully does. The next cinematography element is the use of a long shot. From this camera angle we are able to see the dancers in the background dancing behind her to the music. This makes the artist seem that she is center of attention and that she is more important than everyone else. This is highly conventional of the pop genre as it creates a happier atmosphere and makes the artist the focus of the video in which she wants to do so people notice her.

Music Video Inspirations- Miss Georgiou

We have watched many music videos in which have given us inspiration for our individual video and given some inspirations of what we could include in our music video.

The first music video which we considered when planing our music video and which gave us inspiration for our own production was Ellie Goulding 'How Long Will I Love You'. This is the artist which we are using for our own production and we beliveed that watching her other videos would give us inspirations and ideas in which we could use within our own Ellie Goulding video. Whilst watching this video, i noticed many elements that i would want to include within my own video. The cinematography within this video was the main focus for me and gave me many ideas to include. For example, the hand-held camera shot facing Ellie and her boyfriend was one cinematography element that stuck out for me. This is represents their happy relationship and that she wants to capture all moments together. Within my production, I want to show the good and bad times of a relationship, I believe that the handheld camera shot shows the loving side of the relationship and I will certainly be using this element in my own video.
The video switches between the artist singing in a recording studio to different settings when she is with her boyfriend. I like this element as then it has a mixture between performance and narrative bases concepts. I will also be using this element within my own video as I want the artist to be known within the video, as well as portraying both sides of a relationship, good and bad.
Mise-en-scene is a conventional part of this video, portraying the indie/pop genre well. She is wearing jeans, a baggy jacket and a beanie hat. Her clothing represnts the relaxed nature of the relationship and that they are comfortable around eachother. There are many iconography element used. She is playing the piano at the beginning of the video, this shows off her talents and that her music is created by her. This element portrays her as multi-talented which i want my artist to portrayed as also. I will do this by having my artist playing the guitar and singing into the camera.

The next artist i looked at for inspirations was Avril Lavigne in whom gave me many inspirations that i could include in my own productions. She is very divrese in within her music videos some range from pop/rock to just rock. Her lyrics are also inspiring as they are written by her and therefore truly mean something. The first song i looked at by her was complicated, the lyrics inspired myself and my group as it shows the complicated and hard side of a relationship- which we want to emphasise within our video, the good and bad sides of a relatiobship.

The second artist I looked at was Avril Lavigne whom I took inspiration from as she is so diverse with her music videos in which some range from Pop/Rock to just Rock and her lyrics are so inspiring as they come from the heart and really feel like they mean something. I looked at her song complicated, as the lyrics really inspired me as it shows a complicated love - with heartbreak - and we can feel her anger through her lyrics and her actions within the video. It inspired me as she had used mainly the stereotypes of a pop/rock video with her mis-en-scene costume and make up. She was in a skaters outfit with grungy yet subtle makeup. Although it is subtle makeup it is still very conventional to that particular genre and that is why it has inspired me the most, not because of the lyrics but the way it follows conventions. Although this may not work in our favour, but by many artists following the coventions of their genre they have made great music videos and I think one of the key elements that we need is to follow the conventions especially mis-en-scene as this creates an image for the artist that can make the whole video come together.

The last song in which I looked at which gave me inspirations was the pop/rock music genre with the song Love Song by Sara Bareilles. This music video has a an upbeat tune to it, despite being a sad love song. The setting of the music video is rather strange and can be seen as diverse in which is why it attracted me to this video. It is a cross between a music booth and a dolls house which is showing where she lives. I am attracted to this video because of the story which is involved behind the music which is a bout a strange relationship of where owner of the house expects the women to play love songs and do what she says but she stands up to him and refuses to play so would rather be seen as a person and not an object that you would buy off a shelf. The music video is primarilly narrative but there are parts where a performance is shown, for instance, when she is playing the piano foe the audience. The editing used is different when the music sheet develops a 3D effect and comes to lifem and is also shown at the end of the music video when it appears next to her. The cinematography used is mainly close ups which are used to show and promote the artist. Mise-en-scene is specifically used in the use of clothing where she swaps between a normal white dress and a formal black dress which she wears when she performs to the audience. This can show the different attitudes the artist has when she is performing and when she isn't. For example, she may believe she has to dress up and look nice when she performs in front of people. Another element of mise-en-scene that is used is iconography when the coin is made to look large compared to the small artist who reaches out to take it, this shows the dimensions of size between the two. Overall, within this video, the artist is portrayed as someone whom is onvolved within a strange relationship.

The next video that I Looked at was Ed Sheeran's video of A Team. I looked at this specifically for the editing technique it uses. The first style of editing that the video uses is the use of colour filters, creating the video to be black and white, throughout. The use of these two colours allow for the artist emotions and feelings to be portrayed to the audience. The black and white represents the feelings as being upset and that her life is perhaps dull and that everything is simple. It also create for the video to have a more emotional feel. This can make the audience feel sorry for her and connect towards her, sympathising her situation. This is conventional of the indie genre as the artist is able to convert her feelings through the colours without singing it, creating a hidden message within the video. I will be using colour filters such as black and white within my own production as I believe that it will create a more deep, loving feeling, making the audience believe that the couple are deeply in love. The audience will be able to connect with the emotions that the video is portraying and enhance the audience and artist relationship.
The next editing effect that the music video uses is the use of a time laps. This is where the everything is sped up and the artist is seen to be a normal pace and everything around her is moving quickly. This makes the audience focus on her and that she is the centre of attention. This makes the audience focus on her and the artist is bale to portray her feelings through her facial expressions and body language. This os conventional of the indie genre as the audience are focused on her and able to know how she is feeling. I will be using this in my own production as it allows for the artist to seem as if she is reflecting on her relationship and will allow for the audience to know how she feels about her relationship and they can relate with her as they may been in the same situation.
The final part of editing techniques used in the video is the use of the slow editing. The slow editing allows for the audience to see more about her life and therefore the audience can relate to her more. The longer clips allow for the girls life to be shown to the audience, she is shown to be sitting on the floor and walking around London. This makes the audience feel sorry for her. The slow editing is conventional as the audience are given more insight to her life. I will be using slow editing within my music video in order to portray the relationship in which the artist has. The long clips will allow for the audience to have an insight to her relationship and what the relationship brings. This allows for the audience and artist relationship to build as the audience could of been in the same situation.

History of Music Videos- Miss Georgiou

Music has changed dramatically over the years with many more genres being introduced and also how we as an audience consume the music videos. The earliest music video/ production, also named an 'illustrated song' was made in 1894 which was shown at the theatre which was the only place you could watch this.  However over the years as music video developed, there was a vast increase to the ways in which people could watch music videos. Earlier years people were able to watch music videos on YouTube, on a computer. However, if there was no access to the internet you would not be able to watch the video. This was a limitation as people would have to be in connection with WiFi to be able to watch it. Years after, smart phones with internet and YouTube installed in them however, again, you would have to be connected to the internet or have mobile data to watch videos. Another way people would be able to watch music videos is on the TV, music channels would play released music videos, on few channels, including MTV. Top of The Pops was also another way people would find out about new artists. This way, showing music videos on the TV, artists would become more well known and ultimately gain more fans.  iPod's were another way music videos could be watched by downloading the video onto an iPod from the internet or iTunes. From iTunes you can directly download videos straight to your apple device, however, for the price of £1.99 which again is a limitation as people may not be able to afford the video and would therefore have to resort to YouTube.

The longest serving music channel and first ever music channel to launch onto TV was MTV. Launched in 1981, in the United States of America. This marked importance in the music industry as it gave artists a chance to promote themselves through videos. The first music video that was shown on MTV was The Buggles 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. Allowing for music videos to be played on the TV showcased artists and who they are and what they stand for. This was an easy way for audiences to view music videos and and watch their favorite artists.
In 2005 a long time after MTV was launched, YouTube was then created. This website allowed for people to post and watch videos, ultimately, this lead to artists to post their music videos on here as it is an easy access to watch videos. YouTube gains more than one billion users every month. This site creates a diverse range of people and therefore, music videos would attract more of a wide audience rather than a niche audience that it may have had before. The most watched YouTube video is PSY's Gangnam Style which has over 42 billion views. This is the most popular music video of all time with it being globalized all over the world.

Music genres have dramatically changed over time. With the introduction of new technologies which allows for music to be made, creates genres such as house, electro and dance. The first recognizable genre of music was classical music, however as years went on and music developed and more and more instruments were created, the music that was created also developed. By the 1950's, the birth of rock n roll was introduced. Then the 1960's came and this era was called the 'popular stage' with artists such as The Beatles and Bobby Darin. By the 1970's rock was created and also punk rock. By the 1980's sub-genres were created such as new-wave and post-punk.

As technology has evolved, music videos have also. With more and more technology available for people to use, the cost of music videos have soared. Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson's debut of "Scream" was the most expensive video to make in all time. With it costing, $7,000,000 to produce. Other expensive music videos are from Madonna with her song "Die Another Day" costing $6,100,000 to produce. 3 of Madonna's songs, being "Die Another Day", "Express Yourself" and "Bedtime Story", made it into the top 10 most expensive videos of all time.

Should music videos be censored?- Miss Miller

During the process of analyzing music videos, we looked at the topic of censorship. Censorship is the suppression of speech, communication or other information within media which may be considered harmful, disrespectful, too explicit. It may be used on the radio, music channels and on the internet in order to protect the audience. Censorship will cut out any explicit or harmful words in which may be found offensive to the audience. It allows for young audiences not to be exposed pornographic images for example nudity, or behavior that is violent and unsociable for example taking drugs, stealing or smoking.
Ofcom is the regulator and competition authority for UK communications industries. It regulates the radio, fixed line telecoms, mobiles and the airwaves that wireless devices use.

Various artists music videos have been censored for many reasons whether it is for inappropriate speech, nudity or anything else which is seen to explicit. Here are some examples of music videos that have been censored from the music channel MTV.

'Paper Planes' by M.I.A includes the sounds of gun shots in the chorus. However, the gun shot sounds were removed and replaced by cash register noises in order to remove any references to murder and this would therefore make the song more audience friendly and would able to be played whenever.

The music video for Eminem's song 'Guilty Conscience' featuring Dr Dre had the final scene cut out because it showed graphic images of a murder taking place. It was removed because it is disturbing for viewers to see and watch, especially those of a younger age as it may scar them and they may remember the image for a long amount of time.

Artist- Eminem:
Eminem is seen as a controversial artist with his explicit lyrics which of one of the reasons why him as an artist is seen as a problem and the majority of his songs are censored. The song 'Stan' by Eminem on the CD you can hear a women scream inappropriate language but, however, on the radio it was censored and cut out. The artist then follows to say 'Shut up bitch i'm trying to talk!'. These words can be seen as degrading to women and portray them to be the weaker sex and should ultimately listen to what the man us saying and obide by his rules, this is why these lyrics were censored. Many other words from this song were censored, for example, 'slit' 'suffocate' and 'die' this is in order to make the song as clean as possible and to make it suitable for younger audiences.
Shakespeare's era, men talk about thrusting their wives against the walls, does that mean that most of shakespeare's work should be censored as well? It raises the question that should it be taught in a classroom with young pupils?
People ultimately critisice Eminem because he has songs that talk about everyday life, he is the only artist in whom has broken the boundaries to talk about such things.

Record Label:
Eminem raps about homsexuals in a negative and bad way, and is therefore seen as highly homophobic as he raps about what happened to them in the past when being gay or lesbian were seen as non acceptable.
Eminems lyrics have a personal reflections to a certain event that has happened in his life, therefore, the audiences are able to understand him and his feelings about the event that happened whether it be in the family or in society. His lyrics enable him to let out his emotions and express how he is feeling and be able to tell his story to his audience.
One of his songs, he raps the lyrics 'drown yourself' in a sarcastic manner to suggest that you shouldn't follow what he does and that you shouldn't follow everything that a famous person does just because they're well known.
Eminem swears a lot throughout his songs, this may be because these words can emphasise his passion and anger.

Parents: FOR
There are several arguments to whether parents agree or disagree with censorship. Music videos should be censored as most music videos use innaopropriate words and phrases in which they dont want to expose to the younger generation and influence them in their language. There are two songs in which have disturbing titles. First one is called 'Rape Me' by Nirvana and 'Turn Me On Mr Deadman' by union underground. These two titles are quite disturbing because some women have gone through such circumstances where they have been raped and these women may feel hurt that rape is being glamourized and ultimatley seen as a good thing.
There is an organization named 'Parents Music Resource Centre' (PMRC) who look into the media, particularly music and how they have a major influence on children in society today. This organization believes that the harmful messages and explicit words that some songs use may cause children to become violent, drug users, take part in premarital sex and become a rebelious teenager.
Some parents have written their opinions about how music videos should be censored as it could corrupt the younger generations mind.
One parent commented on the power in which artists have nowadays to express their feelings, they said, 'Some people believe that various artists cannot handle freedom of speech. They abuse their power by putting lyrics that are not appropriate, into the song.'
Secondly, another parent commented on the effects some of these problems cause, they said, 'I believe it should be censored becasue all the younger kids listen to this music and may get ideas from all these things about drugs, sex and voilence. Kids of this generation are already doing these things at the ages of 12 and 13. Kids in the next many years to come may be doing it at an even younger age than they are now.'

Parents- AGAINST:
On the other hand, many parents say that censoring music videos which contain foul language and pornographic images should not be aloud because as long as you watch the music videos with your children and teach them the difference between right and wrong, it is okay for your child to watch whatever they wish and listen to innapropriate music.
Some children may have had a hard upbringings by their strict parents and therefore are taught from a young age specifically what is right or wrong and not to go down the wrong path which can lead to a bad life. This means that harmful lyrics and explicit videos will have no harm.
One parents commented on the freedom of speech and how it is acceptable for an artist to express themselves through foul language, they said, "free speech. If someone grows up in a violent enviornment, that would be all they know. It would be the only way they knew how to express them selves. Taking that away from them would be like banning their language. Some people that listen to explicit music went through violent situation: so, this is reality for them. Violence in the lyrics is their way of honestly telling their stories to the world.
Other parents have also said, parents should control what their children listen to and if they do not like the words used then they shouldn't allow their children to listen to it.
I believe that children are indpendent, children are made to do everyday tasks by themselves, go to school, do homework and help around the house, so, chosing what music they listen to should be solely down to them and their choices.

Fans:
The fans of many particular artists are young children and teenagers. Many younger children will be attracted to pop for instance and older children will be attracted to Rao and Rock. The children in whom listen to Rap may be influenced to speak in a bad manner due to their musical options doing the same and want to be just like their idol. In order to stop this, censorship should be used to protect explicit words to a younger audience.
However, fans of particular artists may argue that censorship is wrong, they listen to the music to enjoy it and relate to what is saying, however, having some words cut out means they cannot enjoy the music as much and not relate because there are words missing.

Music TV- MTV:
MTV have a wide audience with it being a highly recognizable music channel playing a constant stream of different artists. MTV uses censorship in order to protect their audiences from unacceptable behavior and  explicit language.
In Sean Kingston's song 'Beautiful Girls' it included the word 'suicidle' which was seen to unnaceptable by MTV so it was changed to 'in denial'. MTV did this to protect younger listeners and for them to steer away from feeling the same.
In one of M.I.A's songs she included the word 'weed' in which was also censored out in order for the audience not to be influenced into taking the drug.
The song 'Alejandro' by Lady GaGa was not completely banned from MTV but it was heavily censored and was only allowed to be shown on the TV after 12pm. This is because the video shows nudity and exposes religious imagery in a negative way.

BBC Radio 1:
The target audience for this radio station is teenagers ages 14/19. The Christmas song names 'Fairytale of New York' by the Pogues ft. Kirsty Macoll was only allowed to play on the radio station after 7pm as it played the word 'faggot' which the radio station and producers deemed as a foul word and are not allowed to influence the younger listeners this language. Again, in this song there is promotion of drug use when the male singer says 'you're an old slut on junk, living there almost dead'. This is advertising the use of drugs and also it is discrimintating against women. Calling her a slut also condemns that it is okay to be abusive towards women and treat them how men wish.

Conclusion:
The main belief about censorship is a positive outlook. Many people argue that it protects children and vulnerable people from some horrific scenes such as drug abuse, pornographic images and death, for example. This allows for young children not to be influenced by what they have seen or heard. I believe that censorship is highly valued and a good thing in today's society. I believe that artists whom have explicit music videos or songs should only be played after certain times, or if played during the day, should be censored. I believe this because is it key to not expose young children to the harsh words. I will be using and following the rules of censorship in my post as i want my music video to be suitable for ages.

Research into the Diversity of Music Videos- Miss Miller

When studying music videos, it is noticeable that there is a huge diversity in the different styles of videos. For example, dance, rap, pop and indie will all follow different conventions to make themselves distinct from other genres. A diverse music video is one in which that subverts against the stereotypical conventions of a particular genre. A unique video is again, one that includes perculiar characterists that would not be seen else where.

Picture+21.pngWhen looking at diverse music videos, a well known music video director that is specific in this area is Chris Cunningham. Cunningham creates music videos in which are unique and diverse to particular genres. He has worked with many artists, however, the videos in which i will be looking at is Madonna Frozen and Aphex Twin Come to Daddy. These two videos both show examples of subverted conventions to their genre. Madonna's genre of music is pop, yet the music video directed by Cunningham suggests differently. The dark lyrics of her song are reflected in the visuals in which we are shown, this portrayal is part of Andrew Goodwins theory of music videos. For example, she is wearing black clothing and her hair is dark coloured which presents sorrow and sadness. This element links with the lyrics she sings saying 'you're broken' in which is sad and upsetting. The dark clothing and setting in which shows her by herself, ultimately goes against stereotypical conventions of the pop genre. The performance based video allows for the artist to be shown to the audience and be centre off attention. As we are seen many close ups, we are able to see how upset and depressed she is seemed to be. Again, this subverts against typical pop conventions as we expect the main singer to be happy and dancing. Madonna's Frozen video is diverse as we would expect the video to be conventional. Because of its unique structure, music channels may not play it on their channels, ultimately, this means less publicity for the artist and for the song not to have a wide audience making it unnsuccessful in its sale. The next video by Cunningham in which I looked at was Aphex Twin Come To Daddy. This song falls under the electro-house genre. Cunningham goes against the stereotypical house conventions to create a diverse and unique video. The setting is in an everyday living area, around a block of flats, firstly, this isn't typical of the genre, we are expected to see a club setting and flashing lights. Again, in this music video, the music matches the visuals. When the lyrics say 'come to daddy' we are shown children walking to the TV in which we can see the artists face on. Because the electro-dance appeals to the older teenagers and young adults, showing young children within the video may put the audience off and may find it disturbing. Again, this music video is unique as the idea has never been seen before which means that music channels may play it on their channels. This may create publicity for the artist and may gain fans. However, like the Madonna video, channels may be hesitant to show it and would therefore only attract a limited audience and therefore make the song less popular. There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these music videos, the individuality of the videos makes the artist rememberable, it creates publicity and the controversy creates a buzz.

The next director is named Michael Gondry who also creates diverse and controversial music videos. He has worked with Kylie Minogue and the White Stripes in whom both music videos are obscure and ambiguous. The music videos for these artists that he created are out of the ordinary which makes them both memorable. Kylie Minogue's video 'Come into My World' is of the pop genre which is typically associated with flamboyant and extravagent scenery and dance routines which the audiences would expect. However, the artist is the only person shown and is shown repetitively. The repetition of the artist is unconventional for the pop genre which will draw the attention of the audience and engage them to watch more. Another factor that makes the music video so diverse is the fact that Kylie Minogue is wearing casual clothing which subverts typical pop and also has a normal everyday setting. The next video in which Michael Gondry had directed and produced is The White Stripes with their song 'The Hardest Button To Button'. It uses some of the aspects also in which are featured in Kylie Minogues video.  There is repetition of the artists themselves throughout the music video which is self-promotion, they are represented as typical rock artists in the way they are dressed and both are playing instruments. The setting is ifferent images in the audiences mind, making it more entertaining and memorable for them. Music channels are likely to play this music video due to the diversity and eye catching editing of the instruments and also to appeal to the target audience of the rock genre. Kylie Minogue's and The White stripes music videos also present advantages and disadvantages. For example, it makes them both different to other artists from the same genre, making them more well known within their genre. Both videos are also very memorable, so they both make more of a profit. The disadvantages they faces are that they may not appeal to a wide number of people therefore decreasing sales and as each video uses repetition, this may seem boring to the audience and they may lose interest whilst watching.

Overall, the music industry now is a very difficult industry to build yourself up in and be remembered to stand out from the mass amount of music artists within it. Therefore, an artist may feel the need to create a diverse music video in order to be memorable and gain fans. Gondry's idea would be less suitable for my genre due to the use of repetition because as an artist within the indie genre you wouldn't want to bore your audience- you would want to be creative and individual. A lack of audience means a lack of profit and publicity. As well as this,  Cunningham's style would also be unsuitable for my genre due to the use of swearing and explicit scenes and the negative narrative used within the music videos he directs.

Research into music channels- Miss Georgiou

Their target audience is from ages 11-25 years primarily. This is their niche audience who they aim their music towards. This is aimed at this specific age group due to the genre of the music it plays which is the most current music which is constantly on the radio and therefore the music that most of this audience would generally listen to in the everyday world. This is a mainstream station and the playlists vary from pop to indie current music and this would create a better relationship with the audience as they are able to connect more with certain mainstream music instead of music they may not be able to connect to. Also the artists are of a similar age and the audience maybe able to connect to the fact they are at a similar age to the artists themselves and that way more relatable. MTV originally launched on August 1st 1981, where there first word's were "ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll". They played the footage of the first space shuttle launch countdown of Columbia which was launched earlier that year and further the Apollo 11.  The original MTV theme song features the rock theme tune played over a series of flashing MTV flags consisting of changing color and textures. The first music video shown on the channel was the Buggles "Video killed the radio star"which used original technology and basic graphics. The type of music that MTV plays now is a wide variety of music, such as, pop, RnB, rap and indie. Mainly chart music, as it is a mainstream channel, it attracts a wide audience and does this in order to keep views up and attract as many people possible. The main Artists in which MTV play regularly Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Justin Bieber. MTV owns many programmes, including Geordie Shore, The Valleys, My Super Sweet 16, MTV cribs, Catfish and many more. Although the main channel MTV, there are many sub- channels, including MTV base, MTV classic, MTV dance, MTV hits, MTV music and MTV Rocks. The MTV logo is simple with the colours only being in black and white. It is very clear to read and the letters MTV stand out. This illustrates what the MTV channel is like, bold and stands out from other music channels with is vast and varied music artists.

The target audience for Capital FM can range from 11-25.
Capital Fm play current music from the charts so can vary from Pop, dance, house. However it mainly consists of pop music due to the younger target audience.
Some of the main current artists that Capital Fm broadcast are Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, David Guetta and Taylor Swift. Capital brand extended to form a new nationwide digital radio station by rebranding Choice FM as Capital Xtra. The Capital FM logo consists of the radio station number to identify the name with the radio station channel. It also includes the caption "The UK'S NO.1 HIT MUSIC STATION" in order to appeal to a wider range of audience as it is informing them of its popularity. The capital Fm radio logo is the same as the Capital TV logo. They are the same because it is easily recognized that they are the same company and are therefore playing the same thing. The word hit is in a different colour to the rest of the writing, this is to outline the type of music in which they play.

Kiss was originally started as a pirate radio station in London in 1985, as time progressed they became an established radio station. The music channel plays pop, R & B, dance, house and garage mainly aiming to keep the chart music played regularly on the channel. Kiss TV has many sister stations, Kerrang radio, Smash hits, The box are just some of the well established radio stations. The main target audience for this channel is teenager plus, featuring common music that can be relatable to most. This allows for families to feel trusted within the channel that they feel confident enough to listen to the station alongside their family. The channel allows for common/popular artists to be played on the channel meaning that it would create a sense of loyalty within its audience as they can rely on the station playing chart music regularly. In addition to the channel playing music they also broadcast news and events and advertise new singles or albums. This would widen their audience scope as people would not only listen for the music. The logo is purple which is a fairly neutral colour, this would be useful as they can attract different audiences through not being bias to one particular genreKiss has an older audience to previous music channels, due to its contrasting music genres. These attracts an audience of 16-25 year olds. Kiss is its own company, meaning it only plays its own shows with no other companies involved, allowing for music to be played all day. However, within the company they have created another channel named KISSTORY, playing 'old skool' tracks, in which would attract an audience of an older age, increasing the audience barrier.

VIVA first launched in Germany in 1993 and was owned by VIVA media AG and later taken over in 2004 by Viacom who are a global American mass media company, the 5th largest broadcasting and cable company in terms of revenue. VIVA is a music and entertainment channel that launched in October 2009 and is the first sister channels of MTV to be launched on Freeview. VIVA does not only broadcast music and shows such as 'The UK top 40' but also series of TV shows such as; Scrubs, Teen Mom, Catfish the TV show and the most famous of all - Jackass. The main target audience for VIVA being around 16 - 35, through broadcasting modern pop chart music will indefinably appeal to a younger audience but also loyal fans may tune in hoping to hear music they know and love. The logo itself being bright iconic it would create a memorable image in the audiences mind, this would be helpful when trying to distinguish their channel from their competitors. Potentially having a iconic bold logo would create a unique selling point among the brand and their individuality.
